In a shared commitment to powering a sustainable future, Milestone Infrastructure has worked with client EDF Energy to ensure solar savings through innovative lighting solutions at Hinkley Point C.

Hinkley Point C marks the first in a new generation of power stations for the UK. Marking the biggest building site in Europe, the work never stops, but for people to continue to work safely throughout the night, acceptable lighting conditions need to be provided.

Traditional lighting towers were unsuitable, due to high-noise levels, substantial cost of diesel and the requirement for refuelling.

Milestone infrastructure worked with the EDF team to introduce a range of Prolectric products across the site, including 58 solar-powered lighting towers. The lighting towers provided sufficient light, to allow workers to continue working in the dark, while also reducing carbon emissions and diesel usage significantly. As an outcome, a saving of nearly £400,000 was made, alongside a diesel saving of 382,876 litres.

The lighting towers are trailer mounted, meaning they are easy to transport and move, as well as being entirely off-grid, requiring no refuelling.

Speaking on the solar powered technology introduced to site, Tom Marsden, SHEQ Manager at Milestone, said:

“We are proud to be part of such a project, working alongside Prolectric to maintain a safe working environment for all. The benefits the tower lights have delivered for us as an onsite team speak for themselves not only from an environmental point of view but also health and safety as well as operationally.”

Milestone Infrastructure continues to provide Site Operations at Hinkley Point C. Milestone is committed to using innovative solutions to provide safer and greener services to its clients and their customers.
