Milestone Infrastructure took part in one of the biggest careers events in Oxfordshire last week as its Oxfordshire Highways team attended Careers Fest 24 at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium on 20 and 21 March.
Throughout the day, our Oxfordshire team ran interactive activities for the students, asking the budding civil engineers to guess the amount of salt we used to grit Oxfordshire’s highways last year and other quiz questions and a fun game of ‘fill the pothole’ – which proved to be a real hit with everyone.
The annual careers event is organised by the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP) and is aimed at schools across the county. Over 2800 students from over 30 schools attended the two-day event, which had over 80 exhibitors.
Milestone’s team were promoting the wide range of apprenticeships that we offer within Oxfordshire, from our level 2 Highways Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship to our level 6 Civil Engineering degree Apprenticeships. This year we have a particular focus on our Level 2 Highways Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship programme, specifically aimed at students completing Year 11 and considering further education in vocational courses.
The fully funded 18-month course, covers all aspects of highways maintenance, including pothole repairs, grass cutting, winter gritting services and traffic management. Apprentices attend college in Fareham on a block release basis with hotel accommodation and transport provided. They are given a paid, permanent contract from day 1 of the programme and are promoted once the programme is complete. Applications will soon be open for the next programme starting in September 2024.
Phil Raven, Head of Technical Design at Milestone, said: “At Milestone, we are thrilled to be able to showcase our range of apprenticeship schemes – including level 2 and level 6-degree apprenticeships – at Careers Fest. This event offers an unrivalled opportunity for students and their parents to speak to local employers about the amazing range of careers available within the county.
“Milestone Infrastructure is committed to supporting apprentices to develop their careers in civil engineering and the infrastructure industry and help us maintain the county’s road network.“
