Milestone Infrastructure was thrilled to attend St Clere’s School in Thurrock to inspire the next generation of highways electrical workers.

The event was attended by several members of our street lighting team, including James Quinn, Senior Project Manager, Vikki Kelly, Strategic Improvement Manager, Marc Zahra, Customer Liaison Officer, Steve Green, Electrical Jointer and Finley Williams and Daniel Hennessey, Street Lighting Apprentices.

Also, supporting the event was Jane Spink-Orford, a Highways Engineer from our client, Thurrock Council, and work experience student Demi Kelly, who both thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Our team had a chance to showcase what we do at Milestone through three practical demonstrations run by Steve, Daniel and Finley, alongside a presentation from James, to explain our work in Thurrock.

Pupils gained a hands-on understanding through a range of activities, including opening isolators and Distribution Network Operator (DNO) cut outs, installing fuses and cables and putting them back together.

The pupils particularly enjoyed getting involved in the challenge to try and remove and reinsert a cable into a lighting column without setting the buzzer off. The buzzer demonstrated the importance of removing a live cable safely, with the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to avoid electrocution.

The 270 pupils also had a chance to find out about the apprenticeship opportunities we have across Milestone, specifically the opportunities available on our street lighting contracts, including our Level 2 NVQ in Highways Electrical System- Public Lighting.

James Quinn, Senior Project Manager at Milestone Infrastructure, said: "It was a real pleasure to attend the event at St Clere’s. It was clear to me that the students were really engaged throughout the day and enjoyed the activities that we had arranged for them. Hopefully, we’ve sparked an interest in engineering for some of them.”

Andrew Salmon, Head of Careers at St Clere’s, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding work Milestone did with our Year 7 students. Their ability to engage every student fully throughout the event was exceptional. The insights shared about working in the industry were both informative and inspiring, sparking a newfound enthusiasm and curiosity among the students.

“The professionalism and dedication made a significant impact, and we could see the students' excitement and interest grow with each session. We will certainly be inviting Milestone back to work with us again in the future. Thank you once again for making this event such a memorable and successful experience.”

At Milestone, we are enthusiastic about delivering social value opportunities in the communities where we work, to ensure we are educating the future generation and are creating a positive legacy.
