Milestone Infrastructure has picked up two awards in the Road Surface Treatments Association’s (RSTA) Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Awards.
Recognising and rewarding improved SHE performance across all aspects of the roads surface treatments industry, Milestone has won the Behavioural Safety Award and the Health and Safety Innovation Award.
The Behavioural Safety Award recognises Milestone’s ‘Creating Safety’ initiative on its Oxfordshire Highways contract. This initiative involved the formation of workshops with supervisors and operatives to share ideas, voice concerns and create solutions to health and safety challenges. Engagement and communication with the teams was fundamental to the success of this initiative, with the feedback leading to the creation of a 13-point action plan. The success of these actions has been measured at regular workshops.
The most important benefit of this initiative is the reduction in lost-time injuries to zero for an 18-month period during roll-out. Other benefits include a 100% increase in reporting numbers showing the behavioural change to address safety concerns, a 66% reduction in service strikes and increased people engagement across all levels of the contract. As a result of this initiative, a reporting and innovation app has also been created to help further support change.
This reporting and innovation app has resulted in Milestone’s second award win, the Health and Safety Innovation Award. Created with the aim of making reporting incidents and sharing innovative ideas more straightforward for Milestone’s people, the app uses simple drop-down menus and data fields for people to provide details about their innovative ideas and their safety reports.
A broad range of innovations have been implemented following creative and useful ideas submitted by the teams. These ideas range from the simple use of insect repellent bands worn by operatives through to a £20,000 hydraulically operated post puller, funded by the client, for Milestone’s specialist safety fence teams.
Richard Lovewell, Business Director at Milestone Infrastructure, said: “These awards are testament to the efforts put in across the whole of our Oxfordshire Highways contract. It has been a real team effort to improve our health and safety performance through increased engagement and a focus on the positive and proactive ways to manage health and safety and deliver continual improvement.”
Congratulations and well done to everyone involved in both of these award wins!
