We are proud to announce that we have successfully completed a bridge strengthening project on behalf of our client, Peterborough City Council.

The APV Baker Footbridge project demonstrates collaboration of colleagues within our business. The issues to the structure were initially identified by our bridge inspectors, a solution was developed by our in-house design team, and extensive strengthening and maintenance works were delivered on site by our Civils Projects team.

Two phases of works saw major improvements to the bridge foundations, which had suffered subsidence due to tree growth. New piles were installed to the main bridge supports and the remainder of the bridge foundations were stabilised by resin injection, the first time this method has been used by the team in Peterborough.

Once the bridge foundations were stabilised, our team installed a complex propping system to allow the bridge deck to be raised so that the bearing replacement could take place.

The team used various methods throughout to enable the work to take place despite limited access to the footbridge. Mini tracked barrows were used instead of dumpers, chain blocks and tackles anchored around the bridge were used to assist lifting operations, and structural concrete was mixed onsite. Mixing concrete on site also reduced our carbon output, as concrete did not need to be transported to the project.

Tree planting planned later this summer will see an increase in the overall number of trees in the area, supporting Peterborough City Council’s strive towards a Biodiversity Net Gain on all projects.

Will Horwood, Site Engineer at Milestone Infrastructure, said: “It was great to see the improvement works to APV Baker Footbridge successfully completed. The project team, including our specialist supply chain, embraced Milestone’s Right First Time approach, helping us to deliver a high-quality service for our client, Peterborough City Council, whilst overcoming technical complexities and limited access to the site.”

We’d like to thank the community in Peterborough for their patience while we worked to strengthen the bridge, and we hope they enjoy using the restored bridge.

At Milestone Infrastructure, we are committed to developing innovative solutions for our clients, as we work together to create safer, greener highways.
