As part of our highway maintenance contract with client, Oxfordshire County Council, we have successfully completed an ambitious programme of county-wide surface dressing, the largest of its kind in Oxfordshire.
Over 42 working days, our team treated 1,011,803 m2 of road, the equivalent of the distance from Oxford to York.
Surface dressing is a cost-effective highways maintenance measure which, on average, extends the service life of a road by eight to 10 years, by slowing down the rate at which the road deteriorates.
Each year, we carry out a programme of pre-surface dressing patching on selected roads between October and March, to prepare for the annual surface dressing programme which starts in the spring.
Working closely with Oxfordshire County Council and sub-contractor Hazell and Jefferies, our team carefully planned and programmed the surface dressing work in the most time and cost-effective way.
The team worked efficiently to mitigate delays in the project, taking into consideration that surface dressing is weather sensitive, and our April and May was an extremely wet period.
Oxfordshire’s 2024 Surface Dressing programme in numbers:
- 1,011,803 m2 of roads treated in 42 days
- 19,000 man-hours worked in total
- 300 lane kilometres treated – equivalent to the distance from Oxford to York
- 17,400t of aggregate used
- 2,060,000 litres of bitumen emulsion used
- 73,000 litres of Surface Seal Emulsion used
Surface dressing is just one of many surface treatment options available. They vary in cost and suitability, and selection is determined by factors such as the road’s underlying condition and volume of traffic.
Across Milestone, we are passionate about working closely with our clients to ensure safer, greener highways.
