Milestone completes puffin crossing to improve road safety for pupils in Wantage
We’ve completed a new puffin crossing in Wantage, Oxfordshire, to support safer access to school for pupils with special educational needs.
Our teams have installed the permanent puffin crossing point on Denchworth Road, just outside the Fitzwaryn School. Replacing a standard zebra crossing, the need for a puffin crossing was raised by pupils, who contacted their local Traffic Advisory Committee to report that cars were failing to stop.
Delivering the scheme on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council, our team acted as marshals to assist pupils in crossing the road through the works.
Pupils and teachers from the school celebrated the new crossing recently, with Oxfordshire County Councillors Jenny Hannaby, Vice Chairman of OCC’s Education and Youth Scrutiny Committee and Jane Hanna, Chairman of the Health Overview Scrutiny Committee, along with our people and members of the council.
Councillor Jenny Hannaby, who sits on the Wantage and Grove Traffic Advisory Committee, said: “I would like to praise the children of Fitzwaryn School for their initiative in requesting this new puffin crossing.”
“Children from the school wrote to the Traffic Advisory Committee and spoke about the dangers of cars not stopping and why they wanted a different crossing. It's marvellous to now see the crossing in operation. I hope it will improve road safety for the school and the whole community for many years to come.”
Stephanie Coneboy, headteacher of Fitzwaryn school, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the pupils for raising this issue with the committee and we are delighted that we now have a much safer crossing outside the school for the whole community.
“The pupils are enjoying learning to use it as part of the Personal Social and Independence curriculum which involves them going out into the community. During the works, the Milestone crew included us in their discussions and were incredibly accommodating of the school's needs especially at the busiest times of the day.
“As a thank you the sixth form students made the crew bacon rolls and tea one morning which was much appreciated. We would like to thank everyone who was instrumental in getting this project off the ground to ensure that everyone remains safe outside school.”
