Last month Milestone’s Cambridgeshire contract team delivered a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) day at Bar Hill Primary School. The students enjoyed a day of ‘highway maintenance themed lessons’ with 250 pupils in attendance ranging from Reception, up to Year Six.
Milestone ran 36 sessions across the day covering: design and delivery; winter service and potholes road repair; the science of roads; and the importance of civil engineers. The pupils also got the chance to see one of many “fire breathing” Dragon Patchers that repair more than 36,000 potholes each year and observed a road gritter up close.
The event was a great success with 34 volunteers including representatives from the client and supply chain. Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee Chair and Vice Chair, Councillors Alex Beckett and Neil Shailer, also attended to observe lessons and speak to pupils.
These future ‘apprentices’ are eager to maintain links with Cambridgeshire Highways so they can do their bit to encourage road safety and limit air pollution within their school and the local community.
This event exemplifies Cambridgeshire’s commitment to creating positive social and economic impact for the communities we operate within. Milestone’s objectives are to focus on areas including social improvements, job creation, economic growth, the environment, and innovation.
Thank you to those who got involved in volunteering and helped deliver Milestone’s Social Value Plan.
