Helping our clients build a greener future: Milestone Infrastructure introduces revolutionary AI-driven approach to Biodiversity Net Gain assessments

We’re introducing cutting-edge technology to deliver sustainable infrastructure solutions, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and satellite technology to revolutionise Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.

Following a successful trial of AiDASH’s BNGAI system, in partnership with Peterborough City Council, we’re rolling out innovative AI technology across our business, transforming how biodiversity is planned, monitored and managed.

What are the benefits of AI driven BNG solutions?

We’re continuously working to deliver BNG with quicker turnaround times for our clients, reducing the cost that comes with traditional assessments.

Our in-house environmental team are using satellite ecology tools to speed up the process of mapping client’s land use and habitats. This reduces the need to travel to sites and helps project planners to identify both potential losses and opportunities for biodiversity enhancements.

The trial: Junction 3, Peterborough

The system simplifies biodiversity calculation and works well with the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) BNG tools, making it perfect for large land assessments.

Even though we often operate under permitted development, meaning we’re not legally required to produce BNG, we strive to exceed biodiversity goals, with an achievement of over 20% in Peterborough- well above the required 10%.

Looking to the future of quicker, more effective BNG assessments

Encouraged by the trial’s success, we plan to expand the use of this technology.

Ed Godsiffe, Sustainability Director at Milestone Infrastructure, said: “We’re working to be forward-thinking. Alongside our technical expertise, we’re leading the way with the latest innovations to support both our clients in delivering their ambitions around biodiversity improvement and continuously improve our own sustainability, to enhance the services we deliver.

“By making use of the latest tools, we’re able to map, assess and design biodiversity improvements at scale, while reducing our cost to do so.”
