Across M Group Services, we are passionate about protecting the communities in which we work, in line with our Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments.
Recently, Milestone welcomed The Paul Alan Project to two of our street lighting depots, for our teams to take part in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillator training.
CPR is a emergency procedure that can help to save a life during a cardiac arrest, when the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate blood.
Running two separate sessions, 19 of our team members took part in the Croydon & Lewisham session and 37 took part in our Surrey session, where we were also joined by a member of Surrey County Council’s team.
While our operatives undertake one-day First Aid Training as part of their Mandatory training requirements, additional CPR and defibrillator training is increasingly important to our operatives, who are out working in the community all the time, seeing members of the public every day.
By undertaking the training, our operatives gained the additional confidence to both perform CPR and use a defibrillator.
An initiative close to home for members of our team, The Paul Alan Project is a registered charity which aims to make life saving skills accessible for everyone, as well as raise money for defibrillators to be readily accessible for members of the public.
On the day, our operatives had a chance to learn what cardiac arrest is, how to do CPR, including baby and child CPR, and what to expect when calling the emergency services. Our operatives found the additional time spent focusing on this element of first aid beneficial, with some already requesting refresher training for next year.
Vikki Kelly, Strategic Improvement Manager at Milestone Infrastructure- Street Lighting, said: A subject close to my heart, it has been great to be involved in the upskilling of our employees with these crucial live saving skills and knowledge. The feedback on training has been positive and I look forward to continuing our journey with The Paul Alan Project.
Following the training, The Paul Alan Project has installed a defibrillator and bleed control kit at our Croydon depot, which will be accessible to the public. Over the next few months, this training will also take place for our Redbridge, Gloucestershire, Thurrock and M25 contracts.
