At Milestone Infrastructure, we are proud to announce that we have been recognised with a Green Apple Environmental Gold Award.

The award recognises our industry-leading carbon and cost reduction, as part of designing and managing the Tramway Road improvements in Banbury.

Working on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council, the Banbury Rail Station project has seen our team design and develop the build of an alternative route, linking the town centre with the rail station.

During the early stages of designing the Tramway Road improvements, our Design Team worked closely with Oxfordshire County Council to undertake a carbon assessment, using our new in-house carbon tool. The assessment calculated a carbon baseline for the project and the carbon output and financial cost of specific activities.

Measures to reduce carbon were explored, including using alternative draining, minimising the extent of the site that was reconstructed at full depth, and choosing different traffic management arrangements.

These alternatives led to saving 275 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent, the carbon equivalent of 230 return flights from London to Sydney.

Through the design phase we were able to also secure a 19% reduction on the total carbon baseline for the project, as well as a saving of more than £1.25 million.

Richard Stonehouse, Contracts Manager at Milestone Infrastructure, said:?We are incredibly proud to have won a Green Apple Award, which underlines Milestone Infrastructure's commitment to creating safer, greener highways and is testament to the impact of Milestone's carbon tool.

“As we look for new ways to reduce emissions it is encouraging to see the huge carbon – and cost – savings that can be made by identifying carbon hotspots and finding lower-carbon alternatives.

“We're looking forward to working with Oxfordshire County Council to identify even more carbon saving opportunities on this project."

When finished, the Tramway Road Scheme will improve access to the station, by improving the road layout and facilities such as new bus stops, while promoting active travel through the implementation of new cycleways and footways.

Across M Group Services, we are committed to working with our clients to find sustainable solutions, to protect the environments in which we work. Our focus on sustainability is an essential element of our environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.
