Educating the next generation

Milestone Infrastructure, a part of M Group Services’ Transport Division, is always keen to educate and inspire the next generation of Project Managers, Environmental Advisors, Managing Directors and more. So, when Richard Kingston, Operations Manager received an email from Jonathan Clarke, Highways Maintenance Group Manager for our client, Cambridge County Council, asking if we would be interested in providing a week’s work experience for his son, Oliver, we jumped at the opportunity.

Oliver took on the role of Environmental Advisor with guidance from Henry Fenn, Environmental Manager, who arranged the week’s working schedule. Beginning day one with an introduction from Kate Law, Office Manager and then working alongside Thomas Warren, Senior Environmental Advisor, Oliver spent the rest of the week visiting various depots and meeting the wider team.

Proving a huge success, Oliver had the pleasure of learning about different roles out on major projects sites, from using the Design Environment Checklist to check sites for risks before works commence, to understanding the aims and objectives of what ecologists contribute to the highway environment and how this links into the Environment team.

Oliver finished the week by presenting everything he learnt to the team and we had the following feedback from Jonathan:

“I am writing to express my sincere thanks to several of your team who have just provided my son with what can only be described as a fantastic week’s work experience.

From being nervous at the start of the week, Oliver told us all that he did every day and your team’s enthusiasm for the work that they do is clearly infectious.

I know how busy all your team are, and therefore to find the time to make the week so informative and enjoyable is really appreciated. I had hoped that Oliver would enjoy his week and I am thrilled that it has sparked his enthusiasm for a possible career within the industry.

I think what struck me most is the culture that Milestone has running through the team at Cambridgeshire and beyond.”
