Ed Godsiffe, Head of Sustainability at Milestone Infrastructure recently attended three prestigious industry events to highlight measures the business is taking to reach its net-zero by 2040 target, including supply chain emissions. Milestone is committed to a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2025.
As an operating business of M Group Services, Milestone is an integral part of M Group Services’ commitment to halve carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero before 2050.
Ed’s recent talks focused on the Micheldever Road Materials Recycling Facility which serves Hampshire Highways. The contract is in partnership with Milestone, Hampshire County Council and supply chain partner OCL Regeneration Ltd and provides a sustainable solution to decarbonise highways.
In its first full year of operation from September 2021, the facility is predicted to see 35,000t construction waste recycled into Industry Highway Standard materials and 665t CO2e saved.
Ed also spoke at the events about Milestone’s Environment Strategy which is crucial to the business’ sustainability success. The strategy has five key components: low carbon infrastructure, circular economy, biodiversity, sustainable design, and environmental compliance, all vital in the planning, design and construction process.
Milestone is committed to being a leader in the move towards sustainable practice. The business is currently working towards becoming PAS 2080 (carbon management in infrastructure) accredited. This British Standard Institution (BSI) accreditation supports clients in industry measure and monitor their carbon reduction and collaborate on projects across the supply chain.
Ed said: “For Milestone to deliver and exceed expectations as a business, we need to ensure that we are sustainable, with carbon reduction and the environment built into our business targets, processes, and values.
“I have always been interested in the natural world, studying Ecology at university. In the earlier stages of my career, I worked on site for several highways projects and found I was particularly interested in the construction industry and highways. Since then, my role with Milestone has grown and expanded along with the whole sustainability sector. No two days are the same.”
Micheldever Road Materials Recycling Facility is a low impact facility, recycled from an old asphalt plant which has been refurbished and brought up to modern environmental standards.
It recycles Asphalt Wastes Containing Coal Tar (AWCCT) excavated from highway works around the county and turns it into useable products that save up to 50% carbon compared to hot asphalt. The site crushes, screens, blends, and mixes the materials, making them into more sustainable products.
The environmentally friendly site is extremely cost effective as the contract can avoid waste disposal costs.
Milestone’s action towards helping the environment is being recognised nationally with them being shortlisted for two awards at the Construction News Awards taking place 14 July at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London. The Micheldever Facility has been nominated for Low Carbon Project of the Year and Milestone has been shortlisted in the Carbon Reduction Champion category.
As well as national recognition, the business has several projects which are nominated for Green Apple Environment Awards. This is an international campaign which recognises, rewards, and promotes environmental best practice.
Ed presented at the Local Government Technical Advisors Group (LGTAG) Conference: Greening the Black which focused on decarbonising highways and public infrastructure. He also attended the Chartered Institute of Highways Transportation (CIHT) East of England Conference organised by Milestone’s Keith McWilliams, Contract Manager for Peterborough Highways. Lastly, Ed went to the UK’s largest dedicated traffic management, transport and parking event known as the Traffex Conference.
